Ok peeps, firstly sorry for the huge delay to the blog. We've found it extremely difficult to find wifi access points in the various hostels and campsites that we have stayed in. Therefore we shall make this entry an extra long one, as we try to remember everything that has happened. Firstly we found out that Sedgley could not find her sea legs and immediately fell sick, although this did not stop her eating her way throught the ship's food stores. Oh and Brendan is such a moaner; his cabin didn't have a porthole and we didn't hear the last of it. It was only 2 nights Mr Hall!! We all decided to chek out the ship's facilities, starting with the swimming pool. During choppy seas, the pool seemed like a wave machine. Speedo's have made a comeback apparantly, i've seen it. The person will remain nameless. Antony and Craig decided to get up early morning and we go to the gym, first time for everything Ant? And what did they decide to go on? ... The cycle machines...which to be honest weren't really anything special, but were a classic example of 80's gym machines! All in all the crossing was very pleasant and allowed the group to bond for the first time. Oh yes! Daniel! Talk about about in the nick of time. We set out at 12:45pm on Saturday 25th July. Daniel's passport arrived at 6:00pm and the race was on. Wolverhampton to Portsmouth in 2 and half hours? Well, he made it. Lord knows how, but he made it with seriously only minutes to go. During the journey, some of the group had the opportunity to watch the dolphins and we later all met on the top deck and watched the sunset. So that was our boat journey.
We got off the boat and travelled to a small village just outside of Bilbao and our support van was there to fill us with refreshments for the ride ahead. It soon became clear that Spain is slightly more hilly than the West Midlands ... just a bit. Nothing could have prepared us for the shock of the first day and the struggle we would face. We soldiered on through the heat and soon the beauty of the basque countryside began to lighten our hearts, especially the village of Morga. The houses were magnificent and so clean and peaceful, we would have packed up and moved there in a moment. To our delight what goes up must come down and we were soon comfortable on the terrain. It wasn't long before disaster struck. Gurpreet decided to test the Spanish roadside barriers. We were at the bottom of the hill and couldn't help but wonder where the rest of the group were. She was brought down in the van and had sustained some pretty nasty injuries. Despite her injuries, she fought on. We eventually arrived at our destination of Lekeitio, a gorgeous little town with a wonderful party atmosphere. The campsite seemed to be placed on a ridiculously steep hill! The last thing we wanted to climb at the end of an already exhausting day.
We found the campsite after some time, mainly thanks to some english speaking locals and not so much to our current navigator, one Madame Sedgley. Mr Winfield and Mr Hall were there already with the camp all set up. We ended up finishing the evening with a 3 course meal together and gathered our strength for the next day and the miles ahead.
At last we have our first post published...sorry for the delay but we have had technical problems. We promise that others will follow very soon. Sending everyone at home our best wishes and see you soon!!
